Johnny was already in his pajamas when we left; a pair of Phineas and Ferb sleep pants and his customized scrubs t-shirt with "Dr. Toot" embroidered at the pocket. Long story-inside family joke. Do you know how hard it is to remain serious and discipline your 4 year old when he is walking up to every stranger in the aisles, sticking out his hand and saying, "Did you page Dr. Toot? Dr. Toot at your service" followed ever so subtly by a familiar sound effect to go along with the title?
He asks question after question and I throw out answers as quickly as I can think of them. I was in the baby aisle buying diaper wipes tonight and he pointed to the breast pumps and loudly asked, "Mom-is that the thing you used to use with Henry to make milk come out of your boobies." Yes. Yes it is. Now stop making toot sounds at people, and climb back onto the cart.
On the way home, I had a major craving for a diet coke, so I swung into the McDonalds drive-thru line and asked Johnny if he wanted anything-thinking maybe an ice cream cone or a pie. "I'll take a McDouble mom." Huh? I didn't know the full extent of his familiarity with the menu, considering it's a rare thing to him to stray from his chicken nuggets and/or hamburger with 8 pickles. (3 bites btw, and the rest went to daddy.)
I love those moments when I am able to get one of my kids completely one-on-one, and I love age 4. John is just at that age where everything he says either makes me cringe or laugh until I cry. Tonight, I did both.
